Dogs feel discomfort from ear infections much like humans do. Although they cannot verbalize it, certain behaviors reveal their pain. This article highlights the warning signs and common causes of ear infections in dogs.
While prevention is important, treating existing infections is often necessary. Below, you’ll find natural home remedies that can help your dog heal from ear infections without stressing your pet with a vet visit.
Causes of Ear Infections in Dogs
Ear infections can develop due to several types of organisms including bacteria, yeasts, and ear mites.
- Yeast overgrowth: The fungus Malassezia is normally found on dogs’ skin but can multiply excessively, causing irritation.
- Bacterial infections: Weakened immunity can allow bacteria to thrive within the ear canal.
- Ear mites: These parasites (Otodectes cynotis) spread by contact with infected animals.
Dogs Most at Risk
A dog’s likelihood of ear infections depends on breed traits, environment, and allergy tendencies.
Breeds with floppy ears like Cocker Spaniels, Golden Retrievers, and Irish Setters are more prone because their ear structure retains moisture. Thick hair inside the ear canal also increases risk.
Dogs exposed to damp conditions or frequent swimmers tend to develop infections more often due to trapped moisture.
Moisture buildup is the main factor contributing to canine ear infections.
Allergies from food or environmental causes can also predispose dogs to infections, as their immune systems are already compromised.
How to Clean Your Dog’s Ears Properly
Start by applying a dog-specific ear cleaner inside the ear canal.
Gently massage the base of the ear to loosen wax and debris, then let your dog shake its head to help clear it out.
Use soft cotton pads to carefully wipe away loosened residue.
Many veterinary ear cleansers include mild alcohol to dry ears after water exposure, such as swimming.
Avoid inserting cotton swabs deep into the ear, as this can push debris further and cause blockages.
Do not over-clean, and avoid cleaning if an infection is active unless advised by a professional.
Recognizing Ear Infection Symptoms in Dogs
Frequent head shaking and scratching are telltale signs of ear infections. Wondering if your dog has otitis?
Watch for these indications:
- Repeated head shaking
- Persistent ear scratching
- Rubbing ears against furniture or floors
- Head tilting to one side
- Bad smell coming from the ears
- Discharge or crusting
- Low energy or lethargy
- Redness and warmth in the ears
- Swelling or deformity of the ear
Understanding Ear Mites in Dogs

Ear mange is caused by tiny mites called Otodectes cynotis that inhabit the warm, dark ear canal, causing inflammation and irritation.
Symptoms often mirror those of other ear infections, including discomfort and discharge.
These mites spread through contact with infected pets or contaminated items like bedding and toys.
Places with many dogs, such as parks or kennels, increase the chances of transmission.
Factors like age, breed, and overall health influence how susceptible a dog is to ear mange.
Natural treatments such as apple cider vinegar and coconut oil may help control ear mites, alongside other home remedies discussed below.
When Should You Consider an Ear Infection an Emergency?
If your dog holds its head awkwardly or reacts less to sounds, the infection might have spread deeper, risking damage to the eardrum. Such cases require urgent veterinary care.
Signs like swollen, red, and warm ears may signal an ear hematoma, which also demands prompt attention.
Contact a veterinarian immediately if your dog exhibits these serious symptoms.
Natural Ways to Treat Your Dog’s Ear Infection at Home
If your dog is dealing with a mild ear infection, there are several home remedies that can help soothe the discomfort without immediately needing veterinary care.
Popular methods involve gently cleaning the ears with diluted hydrogen peroxide or apple cider vinegar, as well as applying a homemade coconut oil balm to calm irritation.
Over-the-Counter Options for Managing Ear Issues
Using Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a commonly used household item for ear cleaning, although opinions differ among veterinarians about its safety.
Some experts suggest it can help disinfect ears, while others caution it might damage beneficial bacteria or worsen fungal infections.
From personal experience, I remember my father using hydrogen peroxide to clean my ears during childhood!
To use, dilute it 1:1 with water, then gently apply with a cotton ball to help remove bacteria.
However, its drying effect may leave the ear vulnerable to future infections, so use sparingly and with caution.
Consult your veterinarian before trying this treatment.
Cleaning with Apple Cider Vinegar
Thanks to its natural antibacterial and antifungal qualities, apple cider vinegar is a favored choice for ear cleansing.
It contains acetic acid, an ingredient often found in commercial ear cleaners.
Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and distilled water, then use a cotton pad to wipe your dog’s ears.
Be careful when applying if the ears are irritated or inflamed, as it might sting.
Soothing Coconut Oil-Based Balm
This remedy combines calming and antibacterial effects and can be easily made at home using kitchen ingredients.
Try this simple recipe from Wellpet:
- Warm 2 tablespoons of coconut oil gently, mixing in crushed garlic to enhance antibacterial properties.
- Once cooled, apply the mixture to your dog’s ears using cotton balls or gauze pads.
