How Can I Treat My Dog’s Ear Infection at Home? (2026 Guide)
Is your dog constantly shaking its head? You may not know it, but this is a sign that it may have an ear infection, also known as otitis in dogs.
Do you remember having an ear infection yourself? Personally, I remember very well when my left ear became infected, because it was, lo and behold, very painful.

It is a similar ear pain that our dogs experience when they have an infection. Of course, they cannot speak, but several symptoms can tell us that our dog has an earache. We will see them in detail, as well as the causes of these infections.
It often happens that we have to cure instead of prevent! So let's look together at natural treatments to relieve and treat ear infections in dogs!
3 causes of ear infections in dogs

Ear infections can be caused by different types of organisms, namely bacteria, yeast, or even ear mites.
- Yeast ear infection in dogs: Malassezia organisms are single-celled fungi that normally live in small quantities on the dog's skin. However, they can multiply. This form of infection is very common in dogs.
- Bacteria: They can also populate your dog's ears if its immune system is compromised.
- Ear mites: Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) are parasites, so your pet catches them through direct contact with another infected animal, for example.
Is my dog predisposed to developing ear infections?

Several factors can predispose your dog to developing ear infections, such as its genetics, lifestyle, and sensitivity to allergens.
Certain dog breeds with floppy ears such as the cocker spaniel, Irish setter, or golden retriever, are more at risk of developing ear infections, because they trap moisture. Dogs with a lot of hair in the ear canal are also more predisposed.
A dog that lives in a very rainy environment, or who loves to swim, will also develop more ear infections, for the same reason mentioned above.
Moisture is the number one enemy of dog ears!
A dog suffering from allergies (environmental or food) is also prone to having more ear infections, as its immune system is busy fighting allergens.
How to clean my dog's ears?

Fill the ear canal with an ear cleaner.
Give the ear a good massage to properly dislodge debris and then let your dog shake its head.
You can then use a cotton ball to wipe the debris out of the canal.
Ear cleaning products sold in veterinary clinics are generally made from a solution containing a type of mild alcohol, which allows the ear to dry out after a bath, for example.
Important never to use cotton swabs, as they push debris to the back of the ear, which can cause blockages.
Also be careful not to wash them too often and to wait in case of infection.
How to know if your dog has an ear infection?

The typical symptoms of an ear infection in dogs are ear scratching and head shaking. Do you think your dog might have an ear infection?
To be able to spot your dog's ear infection, you will need to pay attention to the following signs and symptoms:
- Dog constantly shaking its head
- Ear scratching
- Dog rubbing its ear against objects
- Head tilted to the side
- Smelly ears
- Large amount of secretions in the ears
- Decrease in energy
- Red and hot ears
- Cauliflower ears
Why does my dog have ear mites?

Ear mites in dogs are generally caused by a tiny mite called Otodectes cynotis. These mites reproduce in the warm and dark environment of the dog's ear, causing inflammation, itching, and often a secondary infection.
Since ear mites in dogs are a particular form of ear infection, they often cause similar symptoms, such as a painful and dirty ear.
Dogs can catch the mites that cause ear mites through direct contact with another infested animal or by contact with objects containing mites, such as bedding or toys.
Dogs that frequent areas with a high animal population, such as dog parks or boarding facilities, are particularly at risk.
It is also important to note that not all dogs are equally sensitive to ear mites and that some may be more predisposed due to factors such as age, breed, or overall health.
You can naturally treat ear mites in dogs with a solution based on apple cider vinegar or coconut oil. Discover these natural home treatments below.
Is an ear infection in dogs an emergency?

If your dog has its head tilted or seems to be less hearing than usual, it is possible that the infection has migrated to the middle or inner ear and that the tympanic membrane is ruptured. It is therefore a more urgent condition.
If your dog has a swollen, red, and hot ear, that is also more worrying. Indeed, it could be an aural hematoma.
Such symptoms of ear infection in dogs should be discussed with a veterinarian to be treated.
How to naturally relieve my dog's ear infection at home?

For mild cases of infection or as a supplement to recommended care, there are gentle natural solutions available without a prescription at the pharmacy. These natural remedies validated by veterinary phytotherapy help to soothe the discomfort due to ear infection and gently cleanse your dog's ear:
1. Colloidal silver (pure quality)
Colloidal silver is renowned for its broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal properties. Used externally or in very small drops on a sterile compress to wipe the ear flap, it helps to purify the area without irritating the dog's sensitive tissues.
2. Calendula Infusion (Marigold)
Calendula officinalis is widely recognized for its powerful anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal properties as evidenced by this study on topical therapeutic options in veterinary dermatology. A cooled calendula infusion can be used with a clean compress to gently clean the outer folds of the ear and reduce inflammation.
3. Matricaria Chamomile Infusion
Chamomile has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties ideal for calming redness and skin itching around the ear flap. Make sure to use a perfectly cooled infusion to gently pat the irritated area.
4. Pure Virgin Coconut Oil
Pure quality coconut oil contains lauric acid, recognized for its antimicrobial and moisturizing properties. Applied in a very thin layer on the contour of the outer flap, it helps to nourish dry skin and relieve skin irritation due to scratching (avoid pouring it deep into the canal).

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Can hydrogen peroxide be used to clean an infected dog's ear?
No, it is not recommended. Although hydrogen peroxide (hydrogen peroxide) is sometimes mentioned in old home remedies, it is far too harsh for the delicate tissues of a dog's ear. It destroys healthy bacteria, worsens inflammation in already weakened tissues, and can be particularly painful and risky if the animal's eardrum is irritated or ruptured. Although it is tempting to use this over-the-counter product from the pharmacy, it is essential to use gentle ear solutions formulated for animal physiology instead.
Can an ear infection in a dog heal on its own?
No, it is very rare for an ear infection to heal on its own. Without proper intervention or care, the infection may spread to the inner ear canal and cause chronic pain or more serious damage to the eardrum.
Can I use saline solution to clean my dog's ears?
Saline solution can be used to gently rinse away surface dirt, but it does not dry quickly and leaves moisture in the ear canal. Since standing moisture promotes the growth of yeast and bacteria, it is better to use a suitable cleaning solution or thoroughly dry the ear after rinsing.
Why does my dog shake its head after having its ears cleaned?
It is a natural and very useful reflex! Shaking its head allows the dog to expel excess cleaning solution, as well as loosened debris and earwax, from the ear canal. You then just need to wipe the outer ear with a cotton pad.
Is ear mites contagious to other animals?
Yes, ear mites caused by the Otodectes cynotis mite are highly contagious among animals (cats, dogs, ferrets) through direct contact. If you have several animals at home and one of them is affected, it is recommended to monitor and treat all of your companions.
How long does it take to treat a mild ear infection in a dog?
On average, with appropriate treatment or suitable natural care from the first symptoms, improvement is often visible within 5 to 7 days. However, it is important to continue regular care until redness and bad odors have completely disappeared.
Conclusion
In any case, ear infections in dogs should be taken seriously, even though they are very common.
If your dog shows signs such as head shaking, ear scratching, or bad odors, use our natural product or the other suggestions provided for ear infection symptoms.

Bonjour Monsieur Mackay,
