Here's Why You Need to Know What Prostate Cancer Is in Dogs

Has your dog been diagnosed with canine prostate cancer, or do you suspect they may be suffering from this disease? If so, I'm sorry to hear you're going through this difficult experience. A cancer diagnosis in a beloved pet is never easy.

While prostate cancer in dogs is very rare (affecting less than 1% of dogs), it can be serious and, unfortunately, fatal. It's important to learn more about this cancer, its causes, symptoms, and life expectancy, so you can be better prepared!

Here at HomeoAnimo , the group of professionals and animal lovers dedicate their expertise and knowledge to helping thousands of pet owners, around the world, cope with their pet's health issues, including cancer diagnoses.

I hope this article gives you the information you need to manage your dog's cancer diagnosis, and also to make an informed decision about your options!

And you can also check out our Complete Guide to Cancer in Dogs for more information on this disease.

What is prostate cancer in dogs?

The prostate is a small gland near the bladder in male dogs that helps produce sperm. Prostate tumors are very rare, but unfortunately, the majority of these tumors are malignant, or cancerous, and likely to spread.

It is possible for benign tumors (non-cancerous growths that do not spread) to develop on the prostate, but this is much less likely.

Canine prostate cancer can affect both neutered and unneutered (intact) dogs, so if you have a male dog, it's good to stay vigilant for symptoms!

What causes prostate cancer in dogs?

Although we cannot identify a specific cause, we do know that there are environmental and genetic factors that contribute to prostate cancer in dogs, and that certain breeds tend to be more affected than others.

Dogs such as Doberman Pinschers, Beagles, and Miniature Poodles are at higher risk than most other breeds. As with all cancers, older dogs are also more often diagnosed.

Prostate cancer can be classified as "primary" or "secondary." Primary tumors mean the cancer started in the prostate, and secondary tumors mean the cancer started elsewhere and moved to the prostate.

Primary tumors are often aggressive and have a high chance of metastasizing (spreading) to different parts of the body.

What are the signs of prostate cancer in dogs?

Canine prostate cancer can be difficult to diagnose and can sometimes affect "bathing habits," their urination and bowel movements.

Here are some symptoms of prostate tumors to look for in dogs:

  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Painful urination or bowel movements
  • Bloody urine
  • Fatigue/lethargy
  • Weight loss/decreased appetite

If your dog is exhibiting these symptoms, be sure to get them checked out right away! Even if it's not a diagnosis of prostate cancer, some of these signs could indicate a different type of cancer, or other health issues! The sooner you detect that your dog is sick and determine what treatment is needed, the better.

During a veterinary examination, a search for signs that the prostate is firm or irregular, or that the lymph nodes are swollen will be performed.

Canine prostate cancer: life expectancy

The life expectancy of dogs with prostate cancer depends greatly on the size of the tumor, its severity, and whether it has spread. Because this cancer tends to be aggressive, life expectancy can be as short as one month after diagnosis or as long as two years.

In order to extend life expectancy, it is important to reduce the risk of tumor spread and also reduce the risk of secondary infection.

Prostate Cancer in Dogs: Treatment

Traditional cancer treatments normally recommended by veterinarians, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, are generally not recommended for prostate tumors in dogs.

Depending on your dog's specific circumstances, your veterinarian may recommend a treatment called NSAIDs or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Choosing a treatment plan is a difficult decision because there's a lot of information to consider, and you'll want to research the benefits and risks of each option. I know you want to find the best treatment available for your pet—and so do we!
