14 Hypoallergenic or Hairless Cat Breeds

You'd like to have a cat, but your spouse, children, or you yourself are allergic. No worries, you can still adopt a cat! You've probably already heard of "hypoallergenic" or "low-allergy" cats, or even "hairless" cats. This doesn't mean they're allergen-free. It's a delusion to believe that such a breed exists. However, it has been proven that these breeds don't cause as many allergic reactions.

What makes them hypoallergenic? We call them hypoallergenic because they produce far fewer allergens than more common breeds. In fact, a cat's saliva contains a protein called Fel D1. This protein is what causes people with allergies to take antihistamines, sneeze, have itchy eyes, or even trigger asthma attacks. However, the following 14 cat breeds produce a lower amount of this protein, making them hypoallergenic. Now you can convince your family members that there are indeed cats you can't be allergic to!

THE ORIENTAL

Also called the Oriental Shorthair, this cat has short hair and very little fur.

CORNISH REX

Very good cat for people with allergies, because they shed very little hair, since they only have the undercoat layer called down.

SPHYNX

This breed of cat is hairless. Therefore, they do not have fur to trap allergens transmitted by their saliva.

RUSSIAN BLUE

The Russian Blue cat is surprisingly hypoallergenic. Although it has fur, it always has short hair. This breed is famous for its blue/grey colored fur, which makes its coat shiny.

BENGAL

What makes this breed hypoallergenic isn't that it produces fewer proteins that cause allergic reactions in people, but rather that it's their coat that makes them hypoallergenic. Their fur requires less maintenance, which is why they don't shed as much saliva.

Bengal cat

BALINESE

This breed of cat produces less Fel D1 protein in its saliva, making it a good companion for allergy sufferers.

SIBERIAN

The Siberian Cat is a great option for cat lovers who prefer long hair.

DEVON REX

Related to the Cornish Rex, the Devon breed has less hair and shorter fur than the Cornish Rex.

DEVON REX CAT

JAVANESE

Javanese cats only have one of the three layers of fur that cats usually have, just like Cornish and Devon Rex cats. The difference is that this cat breed only has the top layer of fur, while the other two breeds mentioned above only have down.

LAPERM

Laperms shed much less than most cat breeds due to their curly, textured coat.

SIAMESE

The Siamese cat is considered a hypoallergenic cat. This generally vocal kitty sheds much less than other cat breeds. While its short fur can cause an allergic reaction, having fewer of them in the home greatly helps people sensitive to feline allergens avoid developing symptoms.

BURMESE

These cats have short, very silky fur and are usually a color close to sable. Other colors exist in this breed, but you will recognize it by its beautiful golden eyes. They are very fond of humans and some people find their personality similar to that of a dog. They are known to produce fewer allergens.

COLORPOINT SHORTHAIR

This breed is a variation of the Siamese cat, created by crossing them with the American Shorthair breed. Fortunately for people with allergies, they share some of the Siamese's characteristics. They are great talkers and shed significantly less than other cat breeds. Therefore, your allergy symptoms will be mild or nonexistent if you choose a Colorpoint Shorthair.

OCICAT

These leopard-like cats are also distant cousins of the Siamese. This breed is a good choice for someone with allergies looking for a feline companion for the same reason mentioned above for their cousin. Their appearance is very similar to Bengal cats, but they are slightly smaller in size. They are also sociable and intelligent cats that can learn to follow you on a leash! They are therefore perfect hypoallergenic companions.
