Leptospirosis (or lepto) is a bacterial infection transmitted through the urine of other infected animals, particularly rodents. Lepto is contracted when an animal's mucous membranes (such as those in the nose, mouth, or eyes) or an open wound come into contact with contaminated materials or surfaces. This bacterium tends to thrive in warm, rainy, or humid regions. It is also more prevalent in areas with large rodent or rat populations.
