What is heartworm infection in animals?


Heartworm infection is caused by parasites carried by mosquitoes. When an infected mosquito bites its host, it deposits saliva near the wound containing microfilariae , or larval heartworms. If conditions are favorable (for example, if the climate is humid enough to prevent the saliva from evaporating), the microfilariae can swim into the bite and enter the animal's bloodstream.


As they mature, heartworms settle in the arteries surrounding the heart and can grow up to 14 inches (35 cm) long. This begins to clog the arteries, restricting blood flow. Depending on the severity of the case, animals may be helped with certain medications (which may include a series of painful injections) and may even require surgery to manually remove the worms. Without treatment, an animal with heartworm will eventually die.
